Parade Theme: Bulding Dreams, Friendships and Memories
Due: February 5, 2010 by Noon
Turn in to: Josh D’Acquisto, UU 111F, 1 Grand Avenue, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA 93410
Concepts may be submitted as a written idea or sketched design, and should include the name, phone number, mailing address, and e-mail address of the person entering the concept, written neatly on the back of the entry. The entry must be 11 x 17 inches or smaller. Please keep in mind that all entries become property of Cal Poly Rose Float Program and will not be returned.
The concept contest is open to everyone who wish to apply, and the winning entry will be used for the 2011 Cal Poly float. The contest winner will receive either two tickets to the 2011 Rose Bowl game in Pasadena or cash equivalent.
If you have anymore questions, please email rfleaders@asi.calpoly.edu
Questions:
1) Can the concept be either in color or black&white?
A: We would prefer the concept to be in black and white, however we will make black and white copies of the color concepts submitted. By making the concepts black and white, the team members are forced to look at the concept and not necessarily color schemes that should be decided later in the design process.
2) Since the concept is not that large, is it acceptable to fold it in half and use a regular mailing envelope, or would you prefer it in a tube?
A: We would prefer the concept NOT be folded. The fold can be distracting when judging your concept.
3) When is the actual design contest?
A: The design contest is on February 6th, in San Luis Obispo.
Cal Poly Rose Float won two awards, a first in Tournament of Roses History! “Jungle Cuts” was awarded the Bob Hope Humor Award by the Tournament of Roses, and the public awarded Cal Poly Universities with the Viewer’s Choice Award.
Speaking as the Program Leader for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I am really proud of both the Pomona and SLO teams. Everyone proved their commitment to team work and dedication to building a beautiful float.
Here are some detail pictures of elements on “Jungle Cuts.”

Roses, petaled carnations, white rice

400 roses to make the beehive

orange slices, orange roses, and marigolds dried and blended

Marigolds (Grown in Cal Poly SLO Flower Field) dried and blended, coffee grounds, and lima beans

Redwood bark and oatmeal
malaluca bark, pepper tree, parsley, spray roses, orchids, and hanging amaranthus

Cal Poly Rose Float thanks the thousands of volunteers for giving up their time and energy to help us complete our float. Here is some of what we have so far.

2010 Jungle Cuts
The Cal Poly Rose Float has been built and is now ready for flowers! Over the past week and a half, the students have been working long, hard days trying to get everything welded, attached, screened, foamed, cocooned, painted, numbered, labeled, and packed. We had some troubles with our radiator leaking, but that problem has been fixed. There were many other hydraulic problems that have also been fixed, but boy was there a big puddle of hydraulic fluid to clean up before our T2 Inspection on December 19th. We passed our inspection on Saturday, which reduced the stress load for most of us. Sunday morning, the team met in Pasadena to ready the tent for the float. Other students were at lab meeting with KTLA for a special segment on New Year’s Day. Sunday evening, students took naps in preparation for Move-Out. Move-Out is when we move the float from Cal Poly Pomona to our decorating site in Pasadena, which is in the Rose Bowl parking lot. Move-Out started at 10:00 pm and ended around 4:00 am. Our float is resting in the tent, all ready for flowers.
If you would like to come decorate, please come visit us at our decorating site in Pasadena. For groups of 8 more please sign up to decorate at: http://www.asi.calpoly.edu/rsquest

The 2009-2010 Team
Time has gone by fast and it is already that time of year again. Cal Poly Rose Float is getting into its last month of preparations for the 2010 float. Decorating will start with dry materials on December 26 and will continue with fresh flowers until December 31. Decorating of the float will take place in the Rose Bowl parking lot in Pasadena, California. The cost is one dollar per day to volunteer to decorate the float. This one dollar will buy you lunch and dinner for the day. If you wish to come to Deco Week please make sure to wear something you won’t mind getting dirty and closed-toed shoes. Please visit the Deco Week web site at http://www.asi.calpoly.edu/decorate for further information. If you have a group that is larger than eight people, you may click on the “Sign up to Decorate our Float” on the top of the page to make a reservation. We hope to see you there!
As of today, the float has officially been foamed!
For the past two weekends students from both Pomona and San Luis Obispo have been working double duty to prepare for our T1 Inspection on Saturday morning (11/21/09) and Foaming on Monday morning (11/23/09). The students have done an exemplary job in preparing the float for the inspection that they passed with flying colors. There were a few minor items that need to be fixed before our next inspection on December 19th. After lunch on Saturday, the team finished shaping the pod, crew compartment hatches, and all the other little details that need completed prior to covering the float with sheets. Sunday morning was a slow start but all the tasks were completed. All the necessary shaping was completed. Everything to be foamed was covered in sheets and plastic was spread around the lab to make clean up easier. Everything was completed by 9:30pm, which is early in comparison to years past! Monday morning at 8am, the two Design Leaders met with our foam specialist and started covering the entire float in foam.

We look forward to seeing all of you at Deco Week!
It looked like get’in nice and dirty was our main goal at Flower Field this past Saturday!! But no little mud puddle was about to stop the amazing work that took place! Within a few short hours our team of dedicated comity members and student volunteers managed to shape 4 beds roughly 4×30 feet in length, install our support system, hang our overhead lighting, and plant close to 2,000 mum plugs! All in a day’s work for Cal Poly Rose Float Flower Field!

Our next step is watering and tending to our field up until harvest in late December. Dates and times for these subsequent work days will be announced one week prior.
Our half of the float arriving in Pomona!
This past weekend we moved our half of the float South to Pomona.
We started this process on Friday by loading our half of the float on to Gary Weisenberger’s trailer to be pulled by his semi-truck. We also packed the elements that were removable and some of our favorite tools. We keep tools in Pomona to accommodate all the people working at lab.
Saturday’s trek started at 6:30 A.M. from our lab. We had about 20 people from SLO volunteer to help connect the float halves and work on various projects while in Pomona. We accomplished a lot in one day at lab. We connected the two-halves, the drive system, and the brakes. The lion and monkey’s continued to be shaped.
Now that the float is whole, there is a lot more work to be done, like shaping the Pod. (The base of the float that all the elements sit on.) There are animal heads that need to be carved, trees to be shaped, and some giraffe’s that need to be shaped. For those of you who would prefer, there is still plenty of flower processing and screening to be completed before December.

Fully Bloomed Celosia PlantsLocated in the back greenhouse corridor of the Horticulture Unit on campus, our Flower Field is nestled beneath the recently constructed retractable roof greenhouse used by many but seldom seen by the general public. In contrast to its original location in the Cal Poly Crops Unit off Highland Dr, our new planting plot is protected from the elements and will accommodate the artificial lighting necessary to properly mature our soon-to-arrive chrysanthemums. With the assets of small-scale irrigation, recycled water, and temperature control, this year’s field is going to be something to look forward to! From its 5-year absence, to last year’s re-introduction back into our program, our field has definitely come a long way!
On October 17th we had an amazing turnout of eager student volunteers to help get this years field rolling. In total, we prepped and planted 14 rows of celosia plus laid 5 rows of plastic for our second planting of mum seedlings due to arrive the week of October 27th.
