Stand against sexual assault with "It's On US"

By: Jenna Brown on Mar 30, 2017 in ASI Student Government

1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men are sexually assaulted in college according to NotAlone.gov. That’s one of several statistics ASI Student Government and Safer want students to learn as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Week 2017.

The week kicks off on Monday, April 3 with free shirts, stickers, and teal ribbons in the University Union Plaza for those who pledge to stand against sexual assault. On Monday and Tuesday students will have the opportunity to take photos with an “It’s On US” whiteboard and can add their names to a pledge wall through Thursday. As part of their pledge, they are encouraged to follow the below guidelines:

  1. Create an environment where people feel safe, and are safe
  2. Get someone home safely if he or she needs help
  3. Hold our friends accountable
  4. Never blame the victim
  5. Be more than a bystander
  6. Step up and say something
  7. Help a victim report if he or she wants to
  8. Know our resources
  9. Keep an eye on someone in a vulnerable situation
  10. Stand up to those who tell us it’s not our business
  11. Be a friend, a supporter, a fellow Mustang
  12. Take responsibility for our action and inaction

To wrap up the week, ASI Student Government and Safer are encouraging students to come to Saturday’s Cal Poly Lacrosse and Rugby games wearing teal in support of sexual assault awareness. The lacrosse game starts at 1 p.m. and rugby games start at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. All games will take place at the Cal Poly Sports Complex.
