ASI Student Government Spotlight: Meet Mark Borges

By: Jenna Brown on Jul 19, 2018 in ASI Staff Spotlights

Name: Mark Borges
Position: Chair of the ASI Board of Directors
Major: Environmental Management and Protection
Minors: Sustainable Agriculture and Agricultural Leadership
School year: Third
Hometown: Oakdale, CA

1) What’s your favorite summer activity?
I love seeing friends I don’t get to see that often and relaxing in my free time. Most of all, I’d say sleeping in is my favorite summer activity.

2) What's something most people don't know about you?
My first career aspirations were to own a pizza parlor with an attached ice creamery. I still consider it a possible backup if becoming an environmental scientist doesn’t work out.

3) Share your favorite ASI Student Government memory.
Serving on the Student Success Fee Allocation Advisory Committee was probably one of my favorite Student Government memories. Serving on that committee allows you to take student fee revenue and put it where students need it most, which is a truly amazing opportunity.

4) If you could create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
Strive towards your goals, but always remember to enjoy the rewards of your accomplishments.

5) What's the best place you've traveled to and why?
I traveled to Amsterdam in the Netherlands this spring break, which was my first (and certainly not the last) time out of the country. It was so interesting to see how other people in different countries interact, have fun, and celebrate humanity’s accomplishments.

6) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you bring with you?
I hope an unlimited supply of food counts as one item … aside from that, a hammock and my phone.

7) What’s on your bucket list?
So many typical things like visit every continent, go skydiving, etc., but also a lot of random things like scuba diving next to whales, see the red crab migration on Christmas Tree Island, and see the big five African animals in their natural habitat.

8) What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about my work ethic and making sure I am always striving to excel in whatever I am doing, whether it be in a job, club, organization, or being a good friend.

9) What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?
I hope to find a meaningful career that I enjoy and that allows me to make a difference in some way for those around me. Don’t ask me what that is though. I’m still trying to figure that out!

10) What advice would you give to students interested in joining ASI Student Government?
Absolutely join if serving your peers is something you’re passionate about! Everyone says to get involved on campus, which I believe is an absolute must for a great college experience, but there are multiple ways to do that besides Student Government. Find a group on campus that you resonate with and run with it!
