Celebrate Body Positivity Month This February

In today's world, it’s all too easy to have a negative perspective when it comes to our bodies. Unrealistic expectations of what we should and shouldn't look like are engrained into our minds, and societal pressures can be hard to ignore. Let's switch the focus to celebrating our bodies, starting this February with Body Positivity Month.

“As college students, we are susceptible to influence by the media and society on our mental health. Body positivity is more than being confident in your appearance, it's about respecting yourself as a strong, capable individual,” Secretary of Health and Wellbeing on the ASI Executive Cabinet Haley Wintsch said.

ASI Student GovernmentCampus Health & WellbeingPULSE, and the Poly Body + Being wellness program at the Cal Poly Recreation Center are teaming up to host a series of events that promote awareness and self-love. Highlights from the month's activities are as follows:

  • Saturday, Feb. 3 and 10, 8:30–10:30 a.m.: Women and Weights Workshop, Poly Body + Being*: Intimidated by weights but want to get stronger? Come learn how to feel confident in the weight room while learning proper lifting techniques from Cal Poly Athletics Strength and Conditioning Coach Sarah Bergheger. Location: Recreation Center Training Room and Lower Exercise Room, Instructor: Sarah Bergheger
  • Saturday, Feb. 3, 1–2:30 p.m.: The Practice of Balance Workshop, Poly Body + Being*: This workshop combines the best of both worlds; mindful yoga and nutrition to help you cultivate balance from the inside out. You will gain the necessary tools and knowledge to start and maintain a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. Location: Recreation Center Studio 2, Instructors: Victoria Kromhout & Lou Ferreira
  • Monday, Feb. 5, 12:15–1:15 p.m.: Body Positivity Workshop, Poly Body + Being*: Looking for a confidence boost when it comes to your body? This workshop will help you discover ways to improve body satisfaction, reduce the risk of eating disorders, and increase your enjoyment of campus life and social interactions. Location: Recreation Center Training Room, Instructor: Danielle Jones
  • Wednesday, Feb. 7, noon–1 p.m.: Wellness Hike, Poly Body + Being, PULSE, ASI Poly Escapes: Need a breath of fresh air? Join us for a casual hike around campus! Please wear walking attire and athletic shoes. Location: Meet in front of the Recreation Center
  • Wednesday, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, 12:15–1:15 p.m.: Navigating Nutrition, Poly Body + Being*: Take the confusion out of nutrition and find your personal success formula to better health and wellness. Learn to identify food and lifestyle choices and set measurable goals to transform your body and mind. Participants will receive a free food journal. Location: Recreation Center Training Room, Instructor: Lou Ferreira
  • Thursday, Feb. 15, 6–9 p.m.: Dance the Night Away, Poly Body + Being*: Bring your friends to dance, sweat, and have a great time with the Recreation Center ZUMBA instructors! Drop in for an hour or stay for all three as you dance and exercise the night away. Location: Recreation Center MAC
  • Friday, Feb. 16 and 23, 10 a.m.–noon: Body Project, Poly Body + Being*: This two-session workshop is aimed at helping you feel better about your body. This program has been proven to improve body satisfaction, reduce the risk of eating disorders, and increase campus and social functioning for hundreds of college students across the country. Location: Recreation Center Training Room
  • Thursday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m.–noon: Health at Every Size Panel, ASI Student Government: Let’s talk about our bodies. How we see them, respect them, and nourish them. ASI Student Government will be hosting this one-hour event with expert panelists that will answer questions and lead a discussion about body image issues and healthy living for any shape or size. Location: University Union Room 219
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27, 10–11 a.m.: Healthy Relationships with Food & Exercise, Poly Body + Being*: Discover how to develop healthy relationships with food and exercise. Learn the science behind nutrition and how important it is to physical activity and a balanced lifestyle. Location: Recreation Center Training Room, Instructor: Danielle Jones
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.: Smash the Scale, Poly Body + Being: Join in on the fun as we literally smash a weight scale. Remind yourself that you are more than a number and destroy your insecurities through this therapeutic activity. Bring your own scale to smash or use one of ours! Location: UU Plaza
