Student Success Fee Committee Votes to Allocate Funds

In 2012, the Student Success Fee was approved by Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong and former California State University Chancellor Charles Reed following an advisory referendum in which 57 percent of students voted in favor of the fee. Following its approval, the Student Success Fee Allocation Advisory Committee was created to advise the university president on how to allocate funds based on current priorities.

This year, the committee voted that the available $250,000 be allocated in the following ways:

  • $120,000 toward a tenured faculty hired with an emphasis on diversity made in response to the recent $150,000 grant of one-time funds secured by Academic Affairs. This grant will develop a cluster hire of up to 10 faculty positions that focus on diversity and inclusion in a variety of scholarly areas throughout the university’s six colleges.
  • $90,000 toward a permanent Safer advocate following allocation of monies in winter quarter for an emergency hire.
  • $40,000 toward programming and graduate assistants within the Cross Cultural Centers.

"The committee was faced with a tough decision of how to allocate this year's funds,” ASI President Riley Nilsen said. “There were several incredible proposals brought forward, but I believe the committee selected the proposals that are reflective of student needs and will reach the most students."

The committee is co-chaired by the ASI president and vice president for Administration and Finance and includes six student representatives from each college who received the highest votes during the annual ASI Board of Directors elections. Representatives from Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and the Academic Senate also sit on the committee.
