By: Jenna Brown on Sep 12, 2018 in ASI Staff Spotlights

Name: Sarah Downing
Position: Vice Chair of the ASI Board of Directors
Major: Civil Engineering
School year: Fourth
Hometown: Burlingame, CA

1) What’s your favorite summer activity?
I love getting to spend time with my family over the summer. Whether this happens through traveling or just being at home, the summer is when I have the most time to spend with my family.

2) What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I am a giant golf fan. I love playing golf, watching golf, and really anything that has to do with golf. I played in high school and this is where I truly found my love for the sport. Luckily, my dad shares the same passion for golf as I do, so I have someone to watch all the major tournaments with as well.

3) Share your favorite ASI Student Government memory.
My favorite ASI Student Government memory was the board meeting where we discussed a resolution regarding the Health Fee Adjustment. This was the first time our board discussed a more heated and controversial topic. I was able to see the intense dedication, passion, and intelligence of this group, and I remember sitting in the board room feeling incredibly grateful to be a part of it.

4) If you could create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
Taking on new challenges is the greatest way to grow and will lead to the ultimate success.

5) What’s the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
Yosemite. My parents absolutely love Yosemite, so as a result I have been there countless times. I have seen the park during every season and have been on almost every hike it has to offer. Even though my family and I have traveled there and seen so much of it, we always return because every time we find new parts to explore. Yosemite National Park is a place I could go to a hundred times and still always be amazed. It is a place where I have had so many memories with my family and friends that it will always feel special.

6) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three items would you bring with you?
I would bring some sort of knife, a water spigot, and a first-aid kit. Anything to help me survive.

7) What’s on your bucket list?
I want to travel to Europe. I plan on traveling all over Europe for two months after graduation, as I have never been to a single country there and cannot wait to explore all of it.

8) What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about the relationships I make. I strive to build lasting relationships in all aspects of my life with people who inspire me constantly and push me to be the best I can be.

9) What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?
I actually just accepted a full-time job offer from the company I have been interning at this past summer. After graduation, I will be moving back to the Bay Area and working at a civil engineering company as a transportation engineer. I want to work for a company that I am truly passionate about and dedicated to. I wanted to find a firm that deeply cares about its clients and the impact our products will have on the people who they will be affecting. After working at this company for over two months, I can see that all these aspects are evident in this company, which is why I am deciding to return! I know leaving Cal Poly will be very hard, but I think it will be a little easier since I am able to do so looking forward to a career that I cannot wait to begin.

10) What advice would you give to students interested in joining ASI Student Government?
If you are at all interested, you should go for it! If serving Cal Poly students and making the Cal Poly community as great as possible is something you are passionate about, then Student Government is the perfect place for you. Student Government is sometimes difficult for students to understand, so it is important to gain as much knowledge as you can of what Student Government does. Come to meetings, visit the Student Government office, talk to other students, or reach out to anyone who sits on Student Government. Joining Student Government has been one of the best decisions I have made at Cal Poly. I have learned, grown, and gained great friendships from this organization. It has exceeded all of my expectations, and I truly couldn’t imagine my experience at Cal Poly without Student Government.
