ASI Student Staff Spotlight: Meet Michaela Garr

By: Jenna Brown on Apr 10, 2018 in ASI Staff Spotlights

Name: Michaela Garr
Position: ASI Event Scheduling Student Assistant
Major: Business (Management & HR)
Minor: Music
School year: Fourth
Hometown: Stockton, CA

1) What makes you happy?
DOGS — for sure (specifically my golden retriever). But also playing music, watching lots of movies, doing fun/adventurous activities with my friends, making new friends, traveling, and eating delicious burritos.

2) What's something most people don't know about you?
I play guitar, piano, and flute, and I have a huge passion for music.

3) Share your favorite memory working for ASI.
The bonding experiences! Our team hangs out a lot outside of the office and I've made some lifelong friends because of it. We also get to know so many other employees that work around us, and everyone is always so fun to talk to!

4) If you could create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
If it makes you happy, keep it; if it inspires you, do it; if it tastes good, eat it.

5) What's the best place you've traveled to and why?
Scotland. The Scottish Highlands are the most beautiful region I've ever seen! I got to travel by myself to a tiny town along Loch Ness called Drumnadrochit, where I saw some cool castles, hiked a mountain, and met some really nice Scottish people!

6) Where's your favorite spot in SLO?
Cuesta Ridge. You feel so high above the city and the valley when you're up there, and the views are incredible all year-round.

7) What's one thing you can't leave home without?
A hairbrush. I love brushing my hair regularly, and I get frustrated if I realize that my brush isn't with me.

8) What's on your bucket list?
Zip lining through a rainforest, petting a tiger, and visiting all 50 states (I'm already at 35!).

9) What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?
I hope to work in the music industry and play a role in bringing great music to the people who want to hear it. I'm currently in the process of looking into positions in Nashville, Seattle, Chicago, and London. I also hope to start a family further in the future and share the things and experiences that I love with them.

10) What advice would you give to students interested in working for ASI?
ASI allows you to work with a wide variety of students, full-time staff, and entities on campus/in the community, so don't be afraid to make connections and get to know everyone you work with. Most people will be pretty awesome and you never know how those relationships could benefit you in the future.
