On Friday, Feb. 9, ASI Events will host the second annual Battle of the Bands competition. Five student bands will compete for a chance to headline their very own Concert in the Plaza performance in March. The performances will be judged by a panel made up of KCPR General Manager Brian Robbins, So You Think You Can DJ winner Luke Liberatore/DJ Alt9, Music Production Union President Austin Gandler, and ASI President Riley Nilsen. They will be judged on categories such as audience reaction, technical ability, originality, lyrics, and on-stage presence.

Here’s an exclusive look at each student band:

Leonardo Devito

While Leonardo Devito officially formed this year, they have been casually jamming together all throughout college. They are a "genre-bending" indie-blues and alternative band that combines a lot of different styles and techniques in their songs. The name Leonardo Devito is "a combination of two of the most artistically talented people—Leonardo da Vinci and Danny DeVito," the band says. Their self-proclaimed spirt animal would be a hyperactive sloth, but with tattoos. You can check them out on Facebook and SoundCloud.

Grand Ave.

Grand Ave. is a country duo made up of Derek Breshears and PJ Repetto. They officially formed in 2016 after consistently playing together in the dorms. Though the band only has two members, they have made their mark by performing at SLO Brew Rock, Blast 825 Taproom, and Farmers’ Market. When asked to describe their sound they said, "I like to think it would be good,” and they describe their vibe as “Cali-country.” Their spirit animal would be a mustang, and you can check them out on Facebook, Instagram, and SoundCloud.

Laurentis

Laurentis started as just two people playing music in the dorms, but has since become a full band that was established in 2016. They are an R&B group that describes their sound as "Sexy, smooth, creamy, yet funky." Their spirit animal would be a leopard, and in their free time they love to play cornhole and are even part of the Cal Poly Cornhole Club. You can check them out on SoundCloud

The Bogeys

The Bogeys were established in 2016 after two roommates started jamming and invited their friends to join the fun. Their sound is ‘60s surf rock meets ‘80s synth pop, or as they describe it, "alternative surf pop." Some of their most memorable performances include SLO Brew and the Bacon & Barrels Festival in San Diego, Calif. Their spirit animal would be a flamingo, and you can check them out on SpotifyiTunesSoundCloudFacebook, and Instagram.

donna

donna was formed in January 2016 after lots of guitar jam sessions in the dorms. They are an indie-rock group, but every song has a different feel. They have played numerous shows, but some of their favorite include SloDoCo, Shabang, and the Sprout Up Gala. They don’t have a spirit animal, but say they are "just Central Coast good boys." Check them out on InstagramFacebook, and Spotify.

Battle of the Bands starts at 6 p.m. in the University Union Plaza. Students with a valid PolyCard can enjoy free Woodstock's Pizza and ice cream from SLO Mama Sweets while rocking out to these five student bands!
