Chumash Auditorium Renovation: Provide Your Input on Dec. 4

By: Jenna Brown on Nov 29, 2018 in Campus News

In October 2019, ASI will begin a renovation of Chumash Auditorium located in the Julian A. McPhee University Union. The auditorium has not undergone a large-scale renovation since the building opened in 1971.

ASI will be holding an information-gathering session for the Cal Poly community on Tuesday, Dec. 4 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Chumash Auditorium. The intent is to gather input on how the space has been used in the past and how it could be improved to meet the needs of the campus community for the future. Architects will collect feedback which will be used to create design concepts during spring 2019.

As the main auditorium used on campus, the facility sees hundreds of reservations every year and is home to some of the university's largest events while also serving as a location for clubs and departments to host meetings and events. Through the renovation project, ASI hopes to enhance the many functions of the space while also capitalizing on advances in lighting, sound, staging, and more.

“Upgrading Chumash Auditorium will provide students and the campus community with more options and capabilities for their meetings and events on campus,” Danielle Diele, chair of the University Union Advisory Board (UUAB) and agricultural business student, said. “By enhancing this space with sound, lighting, and technology upgrades, we are excited to be able to offer an improved venue to better serve the Cal Poly community.”

Chumash Auditorium is planned to be closed for renovation from Oct. 1, 2019 through March 30, 2020. ASI is currently working with campus partners to determine alternative venue options on campus. More information on venues will be available prior to the 2019–20 reservation period. The renovation will be funded utilizing existing reserve funds.
