In October 2017, the ASI Board of Directors voted to approve the creation of the ASI Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. The committee was tasked with researching and recommending the best methods of supporting diversity and inclusion within ASI Student Government to better serve Cal Poly students.

Since then, committee members have worked with other universities to conduct research on campus engagement and the student perspective of ASI’s current engagement efforts. Following this process, the committee created a list of tangible recommendations which ASI could implement. Committee recommendations include:

  • A standing committee on diversity and inclusion.
  • A permanent secretary of diversity and inclusion to serve on the ASI Executive Cabinet.
  • Institutionalization of diversity and inclusion values in the ASI organization values.

“Our goal is to ensure that ASI remains engaged in the discussion revolving around diversity and inclusion and is seen as a potential partner and avenue for students to engage each other in this topic,” Sergio Dimas, chair of the ASI Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and board representative for the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences, said. “We hope that these recommendations provide the opportunity for ASI to constantly evaluate and address its commitments to this important topic on our campus and in students’ everyday lives.”

The board will vote on Bill #18-03: Implementation of the Secretary of Diversity and Inclusion Executive Cabinet Position and Bill #18-04: Implementation of the Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee at the May 16 meeting at 5:10 p.m. in University Union Room 220. Bills were drafted by Nimrah Aslam, secretary of inclusivity and diversity on the Executive Cabinet, Denise Hensley, board representative for the Orfalea College of Business, Mitchell Collins, board representative for the College of Science and Mathematics, and James Smith, board representative for the College of Liberal Arts.
