ASI Student Staff Spotlight: Meet Rachel Shaw

By: Jenna Brown on Feb 27, 2018 in ASI Staff Spotlights

Name: Rachel Shaw
Position: Event Management Office Assistant
Major: Civil Engineering
School year: Third
Hometown: Denver, CO

1) What makes you happy?
Any outdoor activity is what makes me the happiest. I love skiing, running, and camping. Most importantly, just being in the sun and fresh air.

2) What's something most people don't know about you?
I have an identical twin. She goes to school in Washington so a lot of people in college don’t know her. Whenever she comes to visit, people are shocked that there are ‘two of me.’

3) Share your favorite memory working for ASI.
My favorite memory was working the Spring Stampede concert in spring of 2017, put on by ASI Events. They pulled off such an incredible experience, and I was happy to be a part of it.

4) If you could create a slogan for your life, what would it be?
One of my favorites is “Never take life too seriously.” I also say, “All is good,” about 20 times a day, so that is also up there.

5) What's the best place you've traveled to and why?
I just recently got home from six months in New Zealand. That is by far my favorite place to travel. Everywhere you drive in that country offers something different; from beaches to glaciers to rainforests. Its natural beauty is very untouched and appreciated.

6) Where's your favorite spot in SLO?
My favorite place in SLO is MDO. I love running on the ridge trail that overlooks the ocean.

7) What's one thing you can't leave home without?
My water bottle. Anyone who knows me knows that I am always carrying around this bright orange Hydro Flask, and something is usually wrong if I don’t have it.

8) What's on your bucket list?
My bucket list includes a lot of traveling. I really want to go to South America and backpack through there.

9) What do you hope to achieve after you graduate?
I have a passion to help people and I believe that I can do that through civil engineering. I want to be able to supply clean drinking water to those in need, and hopefully do that on an international level.

10) What advice would you give to students interested in working for ASI?
To go for it! ASI is so special because of the community it provides. Even if you aren’t directly in the same department as someone else, this is a community that is friendly and helpful no matter what. People take pride in working here, and I never dread coming into work.
