Have you ever wanted your work to be showcased on international television? This is your chance! Cal Poly Rose Float is currently accepting submissions for the 2019 Rose Float Concept Contest through Feb. 9, 2018 at 5 p.m. The winning concept will cruise down Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, Calif. as part of the 130th Rose Parade which will be held on Jan. 1, 2019.

Anyone is welcome to submit a concept, and the winner will have their choice between two tickets to the 2019 Rose Bowl Game or a $500 cash prize. The theme of the 2019 Rose Parade is “The Melody of Life,” which celebrates the power of music and the culmination of rhythm and color.

“It’s very exciting to see your creation come to life because you get to see your ideas manifest themselves in ways you never thought possible,” Rose Float President and senior mechanical engineering major Sara Novell said. “You get to see movement, sound, added design elements, and of course—beautiful flowers and botanical material covering everything.”

Completed entries must be submitted in one of the following ways:

  • Email to calpolyrosefloat1949@gmail.com with the subject line “2019 Concept”
  • Deliver in person to the ASI Business Office located in University Union Room 212
  • Deliver in person to the Cal Poly Pomona Dean of Students office located in Building 26, Room 110

Submissions must be black and white and no larger than 11-by-17-inches with contact information included on the back. There is no limit to the amount of entries an applicant can submit. Students on the Rose Float leadership team from both San Luis Obispo and Pomona will review the submissions and vote on the winning concept, which will provide the basis for the 2019 final design.

“When our team is excited about a concept that is submitted, the ideas flow and we end up with a beautiful finished product. From seeing a drawing of a concept on paper to seeing the Cal Poly Rose Float driving down the parade route, it’s easy to be impressed by the design and realize the importance of an initial idea,” Novell said.

The Cal Poly Rose Float is the only student-built float in the Rose Parade and has been invited to participate for 71 consecutive years. For questions or more information, contact Rose Float Coordinator Josh D’Acquisto at (805) 756-1182 or jdacquis@calpoly.edu.
